Don Sass

Don Sass

In the early 1980’s, TouchMath founder Jan Bullock picked up the telephone one day and called Don Sass. A graduate of Illinois State University, Don Sass had been a 3rd grade teacher in Portland, Oregon, and he had accumulated years of classroom experience. He had also become curious about how to improve math literacy. Knowing their similar passions, Bullock encouraged him to become a TouchMath trainer.

Don Sass started working with TouchMath, first as an associate trainer, and later he launched his own seminar

company. Today, his signature workshop, TouchMath 4 You, has become a sought-after graduate level continuing education course.

For two decades, he has taught TouchMath to thousands of teachers. Education Service District 113 of Washington State included his seminars in their continuing education offering. The Los Angeles Unified School District and the University of San Diego have also added his workshop to their curricula.

What makes his seminar so well liked is his commonsense approach to math learning, borne of his own teaching experiences.

“I begin my seminars by asking teachers how we should define successful math learning. Many of their answers can’t be measured. My definition is straightforward. If a child can add 5 plus 4 and get 9 on paper, he is successful."
